United Kingdom , with 43,515 official Somali residents in 2001, is home to the largest Somali community inEurope .Somali nationals that were granted permanent settlement in the UK totaled 43,050 people during the period between 1992 and 2002. Although most Somalis in the UK are recent arrivals, there has been a Somali presence in Britain since the early 20th century.
Somalis are concentrated in the
London ,Sheffield ,Liverpool ,Cardiff ,Birmingham ,Manchester andLeicester areas. These communities have had large Somali communities for many decades.The Sheffield Somali community is the second largest and one of the oldest in the United Kingdom, with Somalis having lived in Sheffield since the 1930s. However, most of the current population in Sheffield first began settling there in the 1980s due to unrest and drought in their homeland. Official estimates of the Somali community in Sheffield range from 3,000 to 12,000, but there are no official statistics.
Recently, other cities like Newcastle,
Bristol ,Glasgow ,Edinburgh and Hull have also seen large numbers arrive.The Somali community in Britain is the second largest community of Somalis in the
Western World afterCanada .Somalis in Britain mainly own internet cafes throughout East Londonclarifyme, where there is high population of Somalis living in the Mile End area of Tower Hamlets, where a mosque was created by the community called the Al Huda Mosque.
