Arabkir District (Armenian: _hy. Արաբկիր) is a neighborhood that used to be a separate village in Yerevan, Armenia. At the census in 2001, it had a population of over 132,000. It is bordered by the Hrazdan River to the north and west, the Kentron to the south, and Kanaker-Zeytun to the east. Its main thoroughfare is Komitas Avenue.

History

It was founded in November 29, 1925 by Armenians who survived the Armenian Genocide in 1915. Most people that live in this district came from Arabkir (modern day district of Malatya Province in Turkey), which was populated with Armenians before the Armenian GenocideFact|date=May 2008. Arabkir district is the third largest district in Yerevan.

Universities

The Russian-Armenian State University (RAU) is located in the Arabkir district.

Industry

The RUSAL ARMENAL aluminum foil mill is located in north-western Arabkir, at the rim of the Hrazdan River gorge. Also, a hydroelectric power plant is located directly north of the RUSAL ARMENAL mill along the Hrazdan River.
