Atrophia Red Sun is a progressive/industrial death metal band from Kraków, Poland. Their sound is grounded in death metal but they incorporate elements not commonly heard in death metal, for instance industrial elements.

Biography

The band was formed in 1994 by keyboardist Piotr Kopec. The first line-up consisted of Adrian Kowanek (vocals), Piotr Stepkowski (guitar), Marcin Bochajewski (guitar), Michal Nasiadka (bass guitar) and Pawel Wegrzyn (drums). Their first effort, Painful Love, was released in 1995 by the label Croon Records. It didn't take long until Atrophia Red Sun gained desired recognition in the media dealing with metal music.

The songs on the debut album could be described as doom metal with the lyrical concept dealing with the subject of love in general.

In 1997 Atrophia Red Sun records their second album, entitled Fears. With the debut exploring the doom metal genre, this one is different, both musically and lyrically. This is a personal and in some way pessimistic view on the surrounding world. Instead of high feelings, lyrics deal with harsh and brutal reality. “Fears" drives the band from doom metal to more progressive sounds. Atrophia Red Sun’s music becomes more dynamic and aggressive.

Years 1998-1999 brought many personal changes. Atrophia Red Sun was abandoned by both guitarists and a bass player. It wasn't until 2001 that they started rehearsing once again with the full line-up. In 2001 and 2002 Atrophia Red Sun records a promo and a demo. Their music had become more technical and progressive and their sound was more focused on death metal adding keyboard parts and samples.

Since 1999 Rafal Kastory (ex Lux Occulta, Sceptic) deals with guitars. Bass player Pawel Kolasa (ex Sceptic), was replaced in 2000 by Grzegorz Feliks (Sceptic, Whorehouse, Cremaster). And finally, in 2003 drummer Pawel Wegrzyn is replaced by Milosz Likowski. The current line-up being: Covan, Kopec, Kastory, Felix and Likowski. In 2003 Atrophia Red Sun released Twisted Logic, their third full-length album.

Atrophia Red Sun played a large number of gigs in post communist countries, with such bands as: Crionics, Decapitated, Helloween, Lux Occulta, Rage, Thy Disease and Vader to name a few. They also appeared on Metalmania 2004 Festival, as well as the fourth edition of Mystic Festival with Iron Maiden, KAT, Helloween and Rage headlining.
