Scottish Crop Research Institute

The Scottish Crop Research Institute, known as SCRI, is Scotland’s leading crop research institute.

SCRI is situated in Invergowrie on the north bank of the River Tay, in an agricultural area to the west of Dundee. Staff and students work in high quality facilities with well equipped research laboratories, glasshouses and 172 hectares of land suitable for field experiments.

What SCRI does

Research at SCRI focuses on processes that regulate the growth of plants and their responses to pests, pathogens and the environment. It includes genetics to breed crops with improved quality and nutritional value as fast as possible. By understanding the plant's responses to pests and diseases and how they react to the soil, air and water around them, environmentally friendly and sustainable methods of protecting crops from the ravages of pests, diseases and weeds are developed.

SCRI’s research activities make a clear contribution to the economic wellbeing, quality of life and implementation of policy objectives in Scotland as well as delivering excellence through research outcomes impacting on, and being recognised by, the global scientific community.

Research will continue to evolve to meet the challenges of societal and policy concerns about sustainable land management, healthy and nutritious foods, plant products for non-food industries, biodiversity, and climate and other environmental changes.

Mission and vision

SCRI is Scotland's leading institute for research on plants and their interactions with the environment, particularly in managed ecosystems. Its research products are internationally recognised.

As such, the institute's mission is to conduct excellent research in plant and environment sciences. SCRI's objective is to deliver innovative products, knowledge and services that enrich the life of the community and address the public goods of sustainability and high quality and healthy food.

Staff

More than 300 people work at SCRI, from graduate scientists and visiting workers to support staff and students. SCRI also hosts the Plant Research Unit of the University of Dundee and administers [http://www.bioss.ac.uk/ Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland (BioSS)] , although staff from BioSS are based at various other sites around Scotland.

Training is provided for PhD students and visitors from overseas by senior research scientists at SCRI who supervise postgraduate students from universities throughout Scotland, the rest of the UK and from around the world.
