Savin' Dave and the Compounders

Savin' Dave and the Compounders

Savin' Dave and the Compounders is a comic book commonly distributed in elementary and middle schools to teach kids about the benefits of saving their money. Savin' Dave is a fictional character, a man in charge of a school where he teaches kids that saving money is the best thing to do, because it compounds over time (by earning interest) to make more money. The Compounders are kids who graduated from this school and decided to help Savin' Dave spread the word. The Sinister Spender, the arch enemy of Savin' Dave, teaches kids that inflation decreases the value of money and that it is smarter to spend money as soon as you receive it.

Plot

In "The Further Adventures of Savin' Dave and the Compounders", Savin' Dave is once again teaching kids to save money, along with the help from his Compounders (Jack, Debbie, Eddy, Lisa, and Peter). The story starts with Savin' Dave finding out that two of his students, Jazz and Janine, are being convinced by the Sinister Spender, a parody of Joker from the Batman Series, to spend their money instead of saving it. The Compounders first rush to help Jazz, whose long term goal is to be in a band. A clock known as Ringer is a periscope to the future so that when kids look into it, they see their futures. With the help of Ringer, Jazz sees that if he keeps spending money, all his friends will be a popular band without him in it.

Meanwhile, the Sinister Spender tells Janine that she will be rich if she spends all her money on lottery tickets, instead of saving her money like Savin' Dave preaches. By looking into Ringer, she sees that she will end up a homeless person who uses all her lottery tickets to make a fire to keep warm, because they do not make her rich. It is in this fashion that Savin' Dave and his Compounders are able to convince kids that saving is important. It was earlier revealed that the Sinister Spender was once a student of Savin' Dave, but he never learned how inflation worked, so he believed that in order to escape inflation, it was important to spend money as soon as possible. The kids learn that Savin' Dave was right all along, however the Sinister Spender is able to capture and tie up the Compounders as well as Jazz and Janine. When Savin' Dave comes to try and stop him, the Sinister Spender demands all his money. When Savin' Dave brings out a penny, he throws it at the Sinister Spender, and he is buried in a mound of pennies, as the penny earned interest to make more money. This comic book is a classic in convincing kids to save their money.
