Tate began his professional career that same year and won his first 23 bouts in the middleweight division, capturing the Vacant IBF Middleweight Title by beating
Michael Olajide in 1987 in Tate's 20th pro fight. Tate was only able to defend the title successfully twice, losing his belt to undefeated phenomMichael Nunn in 1988 by 9th round TKO. In 1990, Tate challengedLindell Holmes for the vacant IBF Super Middleweight Title, but lost a close majority decision. Following the defeat, Tate moved up to light heavyweight and defeatedUriah Grant and Andrew Maynard on a six fight win streak to set up a fight for the vacant WBA Light Heavyweight Title against light heavyweight legendVirgil Hill in 1992. Tate lost a unanimous decision. Tate was granted a rematch with Hill in 1994 but again lost a convincing decision. This was Tate's last major fight, and after several victories over limited competition, he was TKO'd byDavid Telesco in the 4th round, his last pro bout.External links
