Atlantic Hall

Atlantic Hall is a coeducational secondary school located about 70 kilometres from Lagos in Nigeria. The school is set in Poke, Epe, close to the Atlantic Ocean.

History

Atlantic Hall is a co-educational secondary school set in extensive and beautiful grounds in Poka, Epe, close to the Atlantic Ocean .

The school has chosen to maintain its present population of approximately 600 students from ages 10 to 17; with a staff student ratio of 1 : 10, every child is known. Academic standards are a priority but we also believe that by educating the whole child, we can bring out the best in each one. The school is committed to academic excellence and a well rounded education.

Atlantic Hall was established in January 1989 by the Atlantic Hall Educational Trust Council.

A registered non-profit sharing organisation, the body is composed of members from varied professions, who share a common passion for a 21 st century Nigeria with an enviable and competitive standard of education.

We strive to prepare our students not just to excel in examinations, but to equip them with skills that will enable them to compete successfully in tomorrow's world.

The board of Governors plays an advisory role to the school administration and helps to ensure that the aims and objectives of the founders of the school are achieved. The teaching staff in Atlantic Hall is an exceptionally committed group of men and women, carefully chosen and continually challenged and developed.

Curriculum Overview

Junior Secondary School

Students spend three years in the Junior School and they all offer programmes in Physical Education and Computer Studies. Evaluation and Certification are based on Continuous Assessment (Form Order System) and End-of-Course Examination conducted by the Ministry of Education leading to the award of the Junior Secondary School Certificate of Education (JSSCE).

enior Secondary School

The school combines the Nigerian Curriculum with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) conducted by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Students spend three years in Senior School and they all offer programmes in Physical Education. Evaluation and Certification are based on Continuous Assessment (Form Order System) and End-of-course examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), leading to the award of the West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC).

IGCSE

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) programme was introduced into Atlantic Hall in September 2001 as a substitute for the Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level. Started in 1998, the IGCSE is fast gaining ground with more schools all over the world now embracing it. With its modern curriculum, the IGCSE has more international recognition and focuses more on the positive achievements of students. Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) through the British Council, conducts the examination in June and November each year. All Atlantic Hall SS3 Students sit for the examination in June.

The Sciences

cience Education

The school has well equipped laboratories for the teaching of science subjects. No effort is spared in updating the equipment and training students in their use. The basic science subjects are taught with a view to providing a solid foundation for higher learning in the fields of science related courses.

The School Farm

Agricultural Science is a very popular subject, especially in the Junior School . Fresh from primary schools, JSS 1 students are proud to have their own ‘beds' in the School Farm.

Arts and Social Sciences

The school provides ample opportunities for students to develop their creative and expressive talents in Art, Music and Drama. Over the years, Atlantic Hall students have consistently won prizes in Art at the national level.

Atlantic Hall has a vibrant choral heritage and the school choir has won several music awards. Music is taught throughout the school and is compulsory for all junior students. They follow a syllabus of listening, performing and composing. Every child has the opportunity of singing in the choir, playing a musical instrument individually or in small groups. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of ways, from violin to trumpet playing.

Drama

Drama is much enjoyed whether as an extempore or scripted class lesson, or in a formal play. A variety of drama productions are staged by both Junior and Senior students every year. Each year the four houses present a House Play for the Founders' Day. Supervised by teachers and professional technical crew, students are encouraged to write and produce plays for the Inter-house Drama competition.

Vocational Education

Clothing and Textiles

Clothing and Textiles is offered as separate subject in the Senior School . Students are taught about fabrics, design and production of clothing, draperies, home decoration and fashion, among other skills.

Home Economics

Home Economics is taught in the Junior Secondary School (Foods and Nutrition in the Senior School ) to introduce students to the rudiments of Home Management and Basic Cookery.

Interestingly, boys also opt for this subject in the WASSCE and the IGCSE. The school has an excellently equipped laboratory.

The Industrial Work Experience (I.W.E.)

The Industrial Work Experience (IWE) is a programme designed for SS 2 (penultimate year) students. It serves as a follow-up to the regular career talks which the students receive - an introduction to a practical experience of their chosen future careers.

The Sixth Form

The ‘A’ Level Course has always been seen as a bridge between secondary school and the university. Atlantic Hall offers students the opportunity of sitting for the Advanced Subsidiary and the Advanced Level examinations. At the end of the first year candidates take the AS examination (resits are provided the following October/November) and the A2 examination at the end of the second year. The ’A’ Level programme in Atlantic Hall is not just about sitting for and passing the examination. Our ’A’ Level curriculum, in addition to the chosen subject combinations offers Foundation Statistics courses for Arts students and the Use of English (among others) for science students. Atlantic Hall builds on the success of the IGCSE in further developing those skills of enquiry and analysis so essential to success at undergraduate level. In their latest form, ’A’ Levels require a broader based approach, at least in the first year of the course, before the student concentrates on those areas of interest or particular strength.

Certainly, a student will emerge from the ’A’ Level course better able to cope with the demands of university, whether here in Nigeria or abroad. The students completing the course will find it easy to choose from the whole range of universities in the UK (not the restricted number accepting “foundation”) while in the US many colleges offer exemption from the US “Freshman” year for successful two year ’A’ Level candidates. Academically , students will be better able to manage their studies , socially they will be sufficiently mature to manage their lives more effectively in and out of the lecture halls and laboratories.

Abundant opportunities exist for students to excel in sports. These include Football, Cricket, Basketball, Tennis & Tae Kwon Do. The school has excellent sports facilities including the Atlantic Hall Sports Complex.

Football is much enjoyed by all students, seniors and juniors, boys and girls. Cricket is very popular- especially with the junior girls.

Boarding

Atlantic Hall is a full boarding school. There are four houses - Emerald, Garnet, Sapphire and Topaz. The House system is at the heart of life in Atlantic hall and it is in the community of the House that most pupils find the confidence and sense of purpose that lead to fulfilment in the larger community of the school.

The Boys' Boarding House and the Girls' Boarding House are specifically designed to have accommodation for the House Fathers and the House Mothers. Everyone has a part to play. The Prefects (who are elected by their fellow students, with staff supervision) contribute to the day-to-day life and to the care of all members of the House. They help the new comer settle in, provide support, and can be an important bridge between the younger pupils and the seniors, who have the ultimate responsibility of seeing that each individual thrives. The House Fathers and House Mothers, helped by teachers and prefects ensure that the new comers develop tolerance, flexibility and a mutual supportiveness. Students' most lasting friendships often develop within the boarding house.

Medical Facilities

The school has a well equipped clinic with a Resident Doctor and Nurses. All medical staff are resident in the school compound.

Mrs. Gbeminiyi Smith

Mrs. Olugbeminiyi Modupe-Ore Smith (née Aboderin) had her secondary education at the International School, Ibadan (1963-1969) and went to Branson’s College, Ipswich, U. K. for her ‘A’ Levels. A specialist in training of teachers and in the education of children from ages 3 to 11. She graduated from the Froebel Institute of London University, Roehampton Lane, London (1971 – 1974). She then proceeded to the University College of St. Mark and St. John, Plymouth.

Mrs. Gbeminiyi Smith is a Board Member of numerous organisations some of which are: Supreme Educational Foundation Junior and Senior High School; Conference Educational Board of the Methodist Church of Nigeria; Paper Sack Nig. Ltd; Akinloye Aboderin Ltd and Smiths Capital and Trust. Mrs. Smith has won several awards including Mother of Wisdom, Charity Entertainment Organisation of Nigeria (1998); Mathematical Association of Nigeria (Lagos State Branch) – Award of Excellence (2002); Murtala Muhammed Award for Outstanding Support (2003).

An author, Mrs. Smith has reviewed many books and presented several papers – ‘The Role of Mothers in the Up-bringing of Children’ (during the Annual General Meeting of International Inner wheel District 911 (June 2000); ‘Rudiments of Psychology’ – (at the Hoares Methodist Church Seminar for Sunday School Teachers (March, 1995)); ‘Comparison of Theories of Sigmund Froebel and Maria Montessori’ (at the Early Childhood Seminar, University of Lagos), among others.

Mrs. Smith founded the Childville Foundation for Less Privileged and Culturally Deprived Children in December 2000. She was the Assistant General Secretary OMEP Nig. (Lagos State Chapter) 1988-90; Chairman, OMEP Day Celebrations (1988); Member, Editorial Board, Early Years Magazine of OMEP Nig. (Asst. Editor).

Mrs O.I. Aboderin

Ms. Olufunmilola Ibiwunmi Aboderin attended Queens College , Lagos (1961 – 1965); School of St. Clare , Penzance, Cornwall , UK (1966 – 1968); Queen's University, Belfast , N Ireland (1968 – 1972). She graduated with a B. Sc (Econs & Accounting). Ms. Aboderin is Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Paper Sack Nigeria Ltd; Akinloye Aboderin Ltd.

She is also a Director of NAAFCO (Scientific Supplies) Limited; Punch Group of Newspapers; Montgomery Security Vaults Limited. A member of the Nigeria Institute of Management. She is also a Member and Treasurer of the Paper and Paper Board Manufacturers and Converters Association (PPMCA).

She is a member of the Governing Council, Nigerian Employers Consultative Association.

Chief Mrs. M. Allan(Hon. Consul of Switzerland)

Chief (Mrs.) Allan (née Ordia) is the immediate Past Chairman, Atlantic Hall Educational Trust Council.

She attended Queen's College, Yaba, Lagos (1962 – 1968) and graduated with an honours degree in Law (1972) from the University of Lagos .

She was called to the Bar on the 23 rd of June, 1973 and appointed as a Notary Public of Nigeria in 1989.

Chief (Mrs.) Marlies Allan obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (D. M. S) from Teeside University, UK in 1974; ‘Commercial Legal Transactions', Queen Mary College, University of London, 1983 and ‘Legal Drafting', Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary College, University of London, 1985

Chief (Mrs.) Allan has on several occasions been invited to speak and present papers all over the world at International Law Conferences in various fields of Law, but especially Intellectual Property Law, including the United States , Germany , Switzerland and the UK .

She is a Managing Partner of Allan and Ogunkeye, a Lagos law firm. An author of several publications, Chief (Mrs.) Marlies Allan is a member and officer of numerous international bodies.

Ms. A.O Bode-Thomas

Ms. Abimbola Olufunmilayo Bode – Thomas attended Anglican Girls Primary School, Lagos (1952 – 1955), Milton Mount School, Sussex, England (1955 – 57), Bradbourne College, Kent, England (1957 – 1960), St. Brandon’s School, Somerset, England (1960 – 63), Oxford College of Technology, Oxford, England – G. C. E. ‘A’ Level (1963 – 1965), Bedford College, University of London where she graduated with a B. Sc (Hons) in Sociology.

Ms. A. O. Bode – Thomas is the President of the Nigerian Chapter of the Africa Travel Association. She worked with the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation from 1968 to 1969 and was a Senior Research Executive with Research Bureau Nigeria Limited (1968 – 1969).

She was in Chad Republic (United Nations Chad Basin Commission) and while there was exposed to International Public Relations in various commitments, from 1979 to 1987.

She was the Managing Director, Menu International Ltd; Biromas Enterprises–Cocoa Merchant (1988–1989). In 1990 she joined Eko Hotel as Public Relations Manager, later Sales Manager and Resident Manager, Eko Hotels.

Ms. A. O. Bode–Thomas loves music, all forms of reading, tennis and films.

The Pioneer Chairman, Atlantic Hall Educational Trust Council (1990-1991), Chief (Mrs) Taiwo Ibitola Taiwo graduated with a B.A (Hons), French/History from the University of Lagos, Akoka in 1973 and had a Post Graduate Diploma in Hotel Management from the Ecole Hoteliere De Geneve, Switzerland,. She had her secondary education at Penrhos College, Colwyn Bay, Wales (1960-67); Headington School, Oxford (1967-69).

Chief Mrs. Taiwo

Chief (Mrs) Taiwo was the Manager of the Maryland Hotel, a fully owned subsidiary of Shonny Investments and Properties Company Ltd. (1975-77). From 1977 to 1980 she served on the Board of two companies in which Shonny Investments and Properties Company Ltd owned majority shares – Mobile Films West Africa and West African Associates. She is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Shonny Investments. She founded Trolope Nigeria Ltd.

The founder, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Conferences and Training Centre, Lagos, Chief (Mrs) Taiwo was the Director, First Finance and Trust Limited (1990); Director, Institute of Financial Planning (1993); Member, African Book Group and the only female member of the Dining Group (1990) – a 20 member think-tank of Chief Executives in the banking industry, manufacturing and business.

Chief (Mrs) O Towry-Coker attended the International School, Ibadan (1963-69), St Helen and St. Katherine’s School, Abingdon, England (1968-70) and the London School of Economics, London.

She graduated with a B.Sc in Economics from LSE in 1974 and specialized in Analytical and Descriptive Economics

Mrs O. Towry Cooker

Mrs O. Towry-Coker was the first female banker in Nigeria. She worked with Chase Merchant Bank Nig Ltd (Credit Marketing Department).

A Director of several companies including Union Securities Ltd., Allied Biscuits and Scorpion Holding Ltd.

She is a member of the Board and Management Committee of the Chris Ogunbanjo Foundation.

Dr. Mrs Dina

Dr (Mrs) Kehinde Omotayo Dina had her secondary education at Charters Towers, Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, England and Headington School Oxford. A medical doctor, she attended the College of Medicine, Lagos University Teaching Hospital from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in June 1975.

An avid reader who loves swimming and squash, Dr (Mrs) K. O. Dina was a Research Officer at the Department of Pharmacology, LUTH (1976-1977) Medical Officer, Lafia Hospital, Lagos (1977-87).

She has since been the Medical Director, Moses Clinic and Hospital, Elephant House, Lagos, which she founded in 1987.

Dr (Mrs) Dina has won several academic awards and prizes including Prize for Best Pharmacology Student and for Best Two Pathology Students of the year.

Mrs E. Fadayomi

Mrs E. Fadayomi attended St. Anne’s Secondary School, Ibadan, St. Brandon’s School, England and had her ‘A’ levels at the International School, Ibadan, from where she proceeded to the University of Lagos for her LL.B (Hons) in Law.

A past Chairman, Atlantic Hall Educational Trust Council (1991-1993), Mrs Eniola Fadayomi was until recently the Honourable Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Lagos State from 1986-1991.

She was the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State. She became a Partner, Irving and Bonnar, in 1990, and she is currently a Director of May and Baker Nigeria Limited.

Mrs Eniola Fadayomi is a member of various International Associations and a University of Lagos Gold Award winner.

Mrs. G.O. Fadayomi

Mrs Grace O. Fadayomi graduated from the University of Nigeria , Nsukka with a B.Sc (Hons) in Mathematics and Statistics in 1964; then had Advanced Training in Applied Statistics, Munich , West Germany , 1976.

Mrs G. O. Fadayomi has attended several International conferences and seminars. She was at the F. A. O. Course on World Census of Agriculture in Ghana (1980) and the Advanced Management Course at ASCON, Topo, Badagry, 1980.

Mrs G. O. Fadayomi was an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, University of Nigeria , Nsukka (1964-65), and worked as a Statistician in the Ministry of Economic Planning, Western Region (1965-1970).

She worked at various departments of the Federal Office of Statistics, Lagos .

She is the Executive Director, FISESCO Ltd, Lagos

Chief (Mrs) M. Okunowo

Chief (Mrs) M. Okunowo (Nee Adams) is the Chief Executive Officer of Sony Music Entertainment Nigeria Limited. She attended Anglican Girls’ Primary School, Lagos (1954-1960). She is an English/French graduate of the University of Lagos, Akoka (1967-1970); the Lycee Française en Guinea, Conakry, (1968-1969) and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, U.S.A (1971-1973).

Chief (Mrs) M. M. Okunowo is a recipient of many notable honours and awards, both national and international. A seasoned administrator, she represented Africa at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, Nairobi, Kenya 1987, and has presented papers at several International conferences.

She was also the Nigeria/African representative at the World Youth Forum in the United States of America from 1967 to 1968 and a member of the 20-man Drafting Committee of the Nigerian Copyright, Washington D.C., (1992-1993). A Council member, Special Olympics, Chief (Mrs) M. M. Okunowo has helped in organizing workshops for the physically challenged. She won the outstanding Personality Award of UNILAG Junior Chambers in recognition of her leadership qualities and contribution to the Entertainment Industry in August 1998.

She was nominated “Miss Unilag’ by the University of Lagos Beauty Queen Panel in 1970. A keen sports woman, she represented Nigeria at the West African University Games in Freetown, Sierra-Leone and Senegal.

Ms. I.T. David

Ms. Idowu David holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Psychology from University of London and a Master of Science degree in Applied Psychology from the University of Wales, Cardiff, She is Managing Director, Moremi Travels Agency; a Director of Miracles Ltd and Polyglot Language Services.

A member of Junior Chamber International, her certification includes the Training of Trainers Certificate – Liege, Belgium (1978), Certificate Member Trainer of the JCI Training Harare, Zimbabwe (1992) and Miami, Florida, USA (1993). She was awarded the status of International Graduate of the Training Institute in Glasgow, becoming an International Training Fellow.

Ms. David is a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society. A member of IATA and Nigerian Association of Travel Agents, Ms David has served as President of her chapter in 1989 and National Executive Vice President in 1990. In 1992 in Miami. Florida, she was elected Executive Vice President of JCI becoming the first African woman to attain this height.

Ms David is widely travelled and has visited over 50 countries. Her skills include Consultancy and Conference Organising.

Mrs F.N.E De-Suza

Mrs F.N.E De-Suza had her formal education in Ghana , the United State of America , Germany and the United Kingdom .

Her sojourn in Nigeria started with her employment, in the United Kingdom , as the Advertising Executive of Punch Nigeria Ltd in 1979. She fully relocated to Nigeria in 1982 and was appointed as the advertising Manager in 1983. Experienced in the Electronic and Print Media, Mrs De-Souza has made her mark in the Public Relations, Promotion and marketing industry. Vastly knowledgeable in the world of fashion, she was, in the late seventies, an international mode. She has since then organised beauty pageants and numerous fashion exposes in Nigeria and Ghana .

She currently hosts a talk show on NTA called NANA'S WORLD. A celebrated columnist, she served on the board of Women's Health Organisation of Nigeria.

Mrs M. Onuzo

A Medical Doctor, Mrs Mariam Onuzo attended Queen's College, Yaba, Lagos , St Swithin's Winchester , England . She graduated with an MBBS from the University of Ibadan and an M B A from the University of Lagos , Akoka.

She is the Medical Director, Life Support Medical Centre, Lagos ; Counsellor of the Teens church, Foursquare Gospel Church . Dr. (Mrs) M Onuzo is the author of “Why Me?” Short stories on HIV/Aids.

She is an avid reader. Asked of her hobbies, she said “reading and reading”.

Mr Jimi Agbaje

A Pharmacist and Chairman, Epic Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Mr Jimi Agbaje attend St. Gregory’s College Obalende, Lagos and graduated with a B. Pharm. (Hons) from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, In June 1978. He had his Internship with the Lagos State Health Management Board from September 1978 to August 1979

He served (N Y S C) with the NNPC Medical Centre in Rivers State 1979 – 1980) and joined the Military Hospital, Lagos as Pharmacist in August 1980. He was Managing Pharmacist, Ewenla Pharmaceutical Company Ltd, Falomo Lagos from January 1981 to March 1984. He has since then been the Managing Director, Jaykay Pharmacy Ltd., Apapa. Lagos.

Mr Jimi Agbaje has held many public appointments and was on the Panel on Fake and Adulterated Drugs (1989 – 1993); Member, National Drug Formulary and Essential Drugs List Review; Member, Lagos State Hospitals Management Board (1994- 1997); Member, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (1997 to date).

His numerous awards and recognition include: Fellow, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (FPSN); Fellow, West African Post-Graduate College of Pharmacists, (FPC) Pharm). He was National Chairman, Nigerian Association of General Practice Pharmacists, (1990 – 1993); Chairman Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (Lagos State) 1994 – 1997.

He is Director, Human Edge Ltd.; Director, Vigeo Ltd; Director Managed Health Care Services Ltd; Director, Healthnet Ltd, A member of Ikoyi Club.

Mr. L.A. Nedd

Mr Lyndell Ayodele Nedd joined Berger Paints Plc as Management Trainee in 1971. He was given full managerial status in 1972 and was appointed Regional Sales Manager for the then three Eastern States. From that point, his profile rose meteorically from Distribution Manager to the Executive grade as Materials Controller, a position he held till he resigned in 1981 and moved on to greater challenges.

He joined Taraba Fisheries Nigeria Ltd as General Manager/Chief Executive Officer and spent about three years with them before he resigned his appointment and went into private business as Managing Director of Deferon Nigeria Ltd. a paint consulting company which also engages in general contracting.

Mr Nedd joined Atlantic Hall Trust Council in 1988 and was first Chairman Parents/Teacher Association. He was actively involved in the Epe Implementation Committee, charged with the responsibility of moving the school to its permanent site.

Membership of the P.T.A. is open to teachers and Parents (for as long as their children or wards remain bona fide students of the school) .

Projects

The School has a vibrant Parent Teacher Association. The Atlantic Hall P.T.A. is actively involved in many school projects. The P.T.A. recently donated a fully equipped clinic with a state-of the art-ambulance to the school.

The school has a population of about 600 students ages 10 to 17. It is a boarding school, where students reside in Year Wings with their House Parents. Along with a sound education, the school also offers sports opportunities such as football, cricket, basketball, tennis and tae kwon do. Atlantic Hall alumni include the elite men and women who are in the top of their class in Nigeria.
