- Beautification
Beautification is the process of making visual improvements in a
town orcity , typically to an urban area. This most often involvesplanting tree s,shrub bery, and othergreenery , but frequently also includes addingdecorative orhistoric -style street lights and other lighting and replacing broken pavement, often withbrick or other natural materials.Old-fashioned cobblestone s are sometimes used forcrosswalk s; they provide the additional benefit of slowing motorists.Beautification projects are often undertaken by
city council s to refurbish theirdowntown areas, in order to boosttourism or othercommerce . Often, this is also spurred by brokensidewalk s, which pose asafety hazard forpedestrian s and potentially insurmountable obstacles forwheelchair users. These projects are frequently part of other larger projects such asconstruction , especially in conjunction with ones fortransit , such as streets and roads andmass transit .Established in 1930, the Memphis City Beautiful Commission is the oldest beautification project in the
United States . [cite web | url= http://www.cityofmemphis.org/framework.aspx?page=150 | title = Memphis City Beautiful Commission | publisher = City of Memphis | accessdate = 2008-05-30]See also
