Brodart

Brodart

Brodart Co. is an international company that caters to libraries by offering a complete line of products and services. Brodart is made up of three divisions: Books & Automation, Contract Library Furniture, and Supplies & Furnishings. The idea is to be a "one-stop shop" for libraries.

History

The roots of Brodart can be found in the discovery of a young college student. In 1939, Arthur Brody modified some photographic film and used it to cover his textbooks for added protection. The idea caught on with other students and a company was born.

In 1954, Brodart began to manufacture a full line of furniture for use in schools, universities, and libraries. In addition, the company began its book distribution efforts. In dealing with over 20,000 publishers and stocking a warehouse of over 225,000 titles, Brodart developed automation solutions for cataloging.

Today, Mr. Brody is retired.

Books & Automation

This division supplies libraries with books as well as automation services that utilize computer technology and software for cataloging and monitoring collections.

Contract Library Furniture

This division offers a full line of library furniture available on a contract basis. The line includes tables & chairs, lounge seating, desks, shelving, and circulation desks, among others. Brodart manufactures all the furniture and offers highly customizable options.

upplies & Furnishings

This division offers a variety of supplies and solutions for libraries of any type. The supplies and furnishing divisions has a selection of over 60,000 products including furniture from the contract furniture division and many other industry leading vendors.

National Attention

Brodart gained some notoriety for its role an episode of the NBC television show, "Three Wishes". The show featured a young girl suffering from cerebral palsy who had a wish to bring a library to her small Ohio town. Brodart played a pivotal role by employing all three divisions to create a complete library in a short amount of time.
