History
Sri Lanka Telecom has a long history of over 150 years, having started its operations in 1858 with the establishment of the first Telegraphic Circuit between Galle and Colombo. In the same year it established its first international Telegraph Communication between then called Ceylon, and India. Since then, Sri Lanka Telecom has passed several milestones, including: in 1991 Sri Lanka Telecom became a Corporation and in 1997 the Company was privatised with the collaboration of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT)and listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange's Milanka Price Index. In 2008, NTT sold its stake in SLT to Global Telecommunications Holdings N.V of Netherlands, which currently owns 44.9% stake in Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) whilst 49.5% is owned by the Government of Sri Lanka and the balance shares remain with the general public.
The company has been given the following ratings by Fitch Rating Lanka: Long Term Foreign Currency Rating - “B+”, Long Term Local Currency Rating - “BB-“, and National Long Term Rating – “AAA(lka)”. In addition to that the company has also been rated by Standard and Poor’s as “B+” for both long term Corporate Credit Rating and Long term Debt Rating, which is one notch above the country’s rating.

Broadband and IPTV
With a view to making Sri Lanka a broadband island, SLT is in the process of introducing the necessary infrastructure in the form of NGN [Next Generation Networks] using optical fibre backbone and broadband services such as IMS, IPTV etc. SLT also provides high speed global connectivity to countries in the South Asian region through its investments in international submarine cables such as SMW3, SMW4, Bharat Lanka submarine cable system [between India and Sri Lanka] and Dhirragu-SLT submarine cable system [between Maldive Islands and Sri Lanka]. SLT Hong Kong Ltd is a fully owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom, fully geared to provide services such as IP transit, IPVPN, IPLC and International voice traffic transit services to global telecom operators and corporates in Hong Kong. SLT launched IPTV services through subsidiary company SLT Visioncom in 2008.[2] SLT PEO TV service is offered through SLT VisionCom Private Limited, fully owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom. PEO TV, which stands for Personalized Entertainment Option, uses Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) technology which has already made a paradigm shift in entertainment for the first time in Sri Lanka with interactive TV options such as Rewind live TV, Time shift TV (TSTV), Video on demand (VoD), Web based internet applications….etc.
SLT’s Intelligent Solutions
SLT’s intelligent solution is a fully integrated business communication solution which helps corporate customers in Sri Lanka to minimize their communication costs. SLT’s IP/VPN solution is capable of carrying quality voice and mission critical data in a secure and reliable manner. It is the main service provided by SLT’s island-wide broadband network via the IP-MPLS backbone to its valuable corporate customers. The company’s broadband internet provides access to SLTnet, the largest ISP in the country, having more than 6.8 Gbit/s international internet backbone, with multiple access to global internet networks. SLTnet caters to the entire community, offering the best customized packages. SLT has been awarded the highest international information security standards, BS 7799 / ISO 27001 certification for its island-wide broadband network operations services including MPLS based IP/VPN services, ADSL services, Business DSL services and ISDN services.
Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel
Sri Lanka Telecom’s mobile arm, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel was the first to launch a 3.5G network in South Asia. Sri Lanka Telecom had 40% shares in Mobitel since it was established in 1993 and later it bought the entire shares in 2002. Since then Mobitel became the wholly owned subsidiary of SLT. With its widespread 3.5G network coverage, Mobitel provides high speed Internet access to its customer base with the greatest of ease and convenience, whilst linking the Sri Lankan education system with the global information highway by providing internet services through its established communication infrastructure. Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel addressed the shortcomings related to traditional methods of higher education in Sri Lanka with the introduction of M Learning, which is an innovative concept of online education launched in collaboration with the University of Colombo.
