Buie Seawell is a professor at the
University of Denver , attorney, and formerColorado Democratic Party figure. He was born in 1937 in North Carolina, the son of the state's former Attorney General, Malcolm Buie Seawell.Buie Seawell earned a bachelor's degree from
Davidson University and a master's degree inTheology from Richmond, Virginia's Union Seminary, after which he served as aPresbyterian minister inAlabama andNorth Carolina . After earning aJuris Doctor degree from the University of Denver, Seawell practiced law in Colorado. He served Colorado GovernorRichard Lamm as Director of the Colorado Office of Energy Conservation and later as Legislative Liaison. Then, he worked for SenatorGary Hart as Chief of Staff for his Senate office and on his 1984 presidential campaign.Seawell served as chairman of the state Democratic Party from 1985 to 1989, during which time he dramatically increased the party budget. He unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic Party nomination for the
United States Senate in 1989-1990.Seawell worked at the
University of Colorado at Denver from 1993 to 1995 before joining the Daniels Business College at the University of Denver.Family
He has three children from his first marriage to Dorothy Burns: Frances "Scottie" Seawell (b. 1964) Malcolm Seawell (b. 1965) and Mary Seawell (b. 1969). He has three children from his second marriage to Marjorie Beaird: David Seawell (b. 1974), Duncan Seawell (b. 1976) and Joshua Seawell (b. 1979). He is currently married to Sarah Cavanaugh. He has a stepson, Matthew Cavanaugh.
