Mazhar made his debut in the 1979 film Baton Baton Mein. He came into recognition with the 1980 film Shaan which was directed by Ramesh Sippy. He went on to appear in over 40 Hindi films playing villain and supporting roles throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

He also appeared in a Hollywood science fiction film titled Terminal Entry (1986) where he played one of the main villains.

He was also best known for his role in the television serial Buniyaad (1987) which reunited him with director Ramesh Sippy who had introduced him in Shaan. His last film appearance was in the 1992 film Angaar after which he quit acting and turned to producing and directing. He produced and directed the multi-starrer film Gang which took many years to complete. Unfortunately Mazhar died of renal failure in 1998 at the age of 45. The film finally released two years after his death.

Personal life

He married Bollywood actress Zeenat Aman in 1985 and they had two sons, Azaan and Zahaan. Mazhar and Zeenat had also acted in a few films together in the 1980s. Tragically Mazhar was ill with a kidney infection and Zeenat spent all her savings for his treatment. The disease however was fatal and Mazhar died in September 1998 of renal failure. Prior to this marriage, he was married to Rubaina Mumtaz, a Bombay socialite, neice of Dilip Kumar and a granddaughter of Fazal Nawaz Jung.
