Bhimber is the chief town of Bhimber District, Azad Kashmir. The town is located at 32°58'60N 74°4'0E and is situated on the border with Azad Kashmir and Pakistan [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/PK/6/Bhimbar.html Location of Bhimbar - Falling Rain Genomics] ] at a distance of about 50 km from Mirpur, Azad Kashmir and about 166 km from Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Bhimber is also known as Bab-e-Kashmir (Door to Kashmir), due to its geographical location of the city. The area is very rich in archaeological remains due to its strategic location, it lies on the route that was followed by the Mughal Emperors for their frequent visits to the Kashmir Valley.

Demography

According to the 1998 census, the total population of the district stands at 297,000, while its population according to 1999 projections is approximately 303,000. latest figures show the population as 350,000, with an annual growth rate of 2.6% and household size of 6.7. In Tehsil Bhimber there is village named "Gurah Lillian" which has many bricks making plants and plays a crucial roll in the development of whole the district.

In District Bhimber, there is a tribe system. Mostly people believe in caste system. They marry within their castes. Rare chances are present to marry with other castes. Main tribes are Jaats,Raja,Gujar,Malik and Mirza etc. are the biggest tribe in the region. Politically Jaats,Raja and Mirza lead the whole area. The primary language is Pahari/Punjabi. Raja Zulqarnain is the president of Azad Kashmir from Tehsil Bhimber.

History

Bhimber has been important strategically, it lies on the route that was followed by the Mughal Emperors for their frequent visits to the Kashmir Valley. It is also known as "Baab-e-Kashmir" (Door to Kashmir) because of its importance and geographical location which was ideal for Mughal Emperors to enter Kashmir.
