- Allsports
Allsports.com is a web site featuring sports news, first established in 1994.
History
The site was started by Jerry Preeper, who had an idea of beginning a sports news site that was written entirely by fans. From a business standpoint it made good sense, as there could be a very large base of fan reporters who'd work voluntarily, and could create a large enough reader base to attract advertisers, and all revenue would go straight to Preeper. This concept worked, as sheer enthusiasm was enough to drive a wide range of fans to write for the site.
The site had sections to cover virtually everything, from
college football toMajor League Baseball , from theNBA toCanadian Football . There was even a page devoted toProfessional wrestling , which had a very dedicated fanbase. If there weren't any fan reporters to cover certain sports, Allsports subscribed to wire services to provide news.In addition to the content, Allsports also sponsored
message board s for all pages they had created, and later on, began a store selling sports merchandise and memorabilia. It also hosted a sister site, Smackopolis.com, intended to feature articles heavy with "smack talk". It may have been intended to branch out as its own site, but if that was the case it failed, as there was only one original writer working for the site and about every featured article linked back to Allsports. The site remained fairly well intact with this concept until 2003, when for some unexplained reason, all stories written by fan reporters seemed to have ceased publishing. It is unknown if Preeper decided to discontinue all fan reporting, if he decided to stop focusing on the website altogether, or if he even died. Since the original content was discontinued, the site has mostly been composed of wire reports. There are a few active sites, most notably the
New York Yankees page.Allsports was also notable for hosting a
Slamball fan page, featuring several writers and was mainly thought to be a gathering of those who took the sport seriously. It is believed that if the sport was still active today, so would the fan page.External links
