Talebi had a very short playing career in which he played for
Daraei F.C. ,Esteghlal F.C. and theIran national football team . He was voted by former team players and footballing experts as one of the best midfielders in Iran's football history. He was known for his heads up plays, his jumping abilities and his skills with the ball.Managerial career
Talebi attended
Chelsea F.C. coaching school inEngland from 1971 to 1973. He coached theIran national under-20 football team from 1975 to 1977.He was the head coach of the Iranian national team during the
1998 FIFA World Cup . Prior to the tournament, he was appointed to replaceTomislav Ivic after Iran lost 1–7 toA.S. Roma in a warm up friendly match.
