Bela Stena (Serbian
Cyrillic : Бела Стена) is an urban neighborhood ofBelgrade , the capital ofSerbia . It is located in Belgrade's municipality of Palilula.Bela Stena is an easternmost extension of the neighborhood of
Višnjica and it is located 12 km from the downtown Belgrade on the right bank of theDanube , across the western tip of the Danube's island ofForkontumac . The name, "bela stena", is descriptive, meaning "white rock" in Serbian.Bela Stena is actually a weekend-settlement, without resident population. It has some 280 weekend-houses owned by the Belgraders and four fish restaurants. A small beach made it a popular resort in the 1970s and 1980s, when settlement grew up to the population of 20,000 over the weekends. It was especially popular as the destination for children tourism. But as much hasn't been done to improve the conditions, especially in terms of traffic accessibility, with the rapid expansion and modernization of
Ada Ciganlija close to downtown Belgrade and emergence of the Lido beach nearZemun , Bela Stena became less and less popular, though it is estimated that some 7,000 people still visit over the weekends during summer season.
