"The Jersey Devil" was the fifth episode of the first season of "The X-Files" science-fiction television series created by Chris Carter. It dealt with the idea of sub-humans living wild in the woods surrounding Atlantic City, NJ.

Plot

The murder of a homeless man which is very similar in detail to a murder committed in 1947 leads Mulder and Scully to the legendary man-beast the Jersey Devil roaming in the forests surrounding Atlantic City.

Mulder and Scully are summoned to investigate, but Scully leaves early to go to her Godson's birthday party. There she meets a divorced man with a child who she later goes on a date with. Mulder sticks around to get more information on the case, but is met with a reluctant police squad who don't want to incite mass panic in a city that thrives on tourists. So Mulder stakes out the slums of Atlantic City by switching places with a homeless man who's claimed to have seen the Jersey Devil. Mulder witnesses the Devil, and follows it. He determines it to be a near-human female, and summons Scully back up to New Jersey (away from her date with the aforementioned divorced man). There they chase the devil into the forest, but the police squad shoots the female devil dead. The episode ends with a man and his son hunting in the forest, and after they pass over a hole in the ground, a small child, presumably the offspring of the devil, is seen peering out.
