Gliding is in general unpowered flight using an aerofoil mechanism to gain lift. It can refer to

*Unpowered flight in animals: Many animals can glide but not fly such as flying squirrels, flying snakes, or flying fish. Many animals with powered flight, such as birds may also glide in some circumstances (see bird flight).
*Unpowered flight in aviation. There are a number of machines made by humans that can glide, which may be manned or unmanned. Gliding often is used to refer to the sport of using these machines.
*Gliding may also refer to certain dance moves
*Gliding is part of some swimming strokes.
