Edward French

Edward French (b ? - ) is a Canadian Christian Brother who was convicted in 1991 of indecent assault against children as part of the Mount Cashel Orphanage scandal in Newfoundland, Canada. [http://www.lcc.gc.ca/research_project/ica/pubs/besrep/part_2-en.asp]

He received a prison term of 12 months for his crimes. [Ibid.] (Crown v. French (1991), 93 Nfld. and P.E.I.R. 34 (Nfld. Sup. Ct. Trial Division).

Time at Mt. Cashel Orphanage

In the 1990s, criminal proceedings began against members of the Christian Brotherhood in Newfoundland. The proceedings were based on allegations of physical and sexual abuse against boys at the Mount Cashel Orphanage during the 1980s. It was alleged that the Brothers were allowed to escape prosecution at the time if they left Newfoundland [ [http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/ethics/integrity2.htm Religious Life Without Integrity - Part 2 ] ] .

Time at Saint Thomas More Collegiate (British Columbia)

Several Brothers left Newfoundland and went to teach at St. Thomas More Collegiate in British Columbia. The subsequent lawsuits [ [http://www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2002/just/1213n07.htm Mount Cashel ] ] by the Mount Cashel victims against the Christian Brothers organization threatened to close STMC in 2004 [http://www.nopedo.org/english/pages/actualite12.html] .
