Australia n politician, has been anAustralian Labor Party member of theAustralian House of Representatives since October 1998, representing theDivision of Chisholm , Victoria. She was born inMelbourne , Victoria, and was educated at theUniversity of Melbourne andMonash University .Before entering politics, Burke worked as an industrial officer. In this capacity, she worked in the Victorian roads department 1988-93 and the Victorian Institute of Technology 1993-94. In 1994, she joined the
Finance Sector Union as their National Industrial Officer. After Labor's win at the 2007 federal election, Burke was elected as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. She was presiding the chamber on the first Friday sitting day of the new Government when Opposition MPDon Randall entered the chamber with a cardboard cut out of Prime MinisterKevin Rudd . Burke removed the member from the chamber before suspending the sitting, as had been done by SpeakerHarry Jenkins earlier in the day.External links
