Scottish Labour Party (1888)
- Scottish Labour Party (1888)
The Scottish Labour Party, also known as the Scottish Parliamentary Labour Party, was formed by Robert Cunninghame-Graham, the first socialist MP in the parliament of the United Kingdom, who later went on to become the first president of the Scottish National Party, and Keir Hardie, who later became the first leader of the Labour Party (UK).
Robert Cunninghame-Graham, a strong supporter of Scottish independence, was the party's only MP, for the North West Lanarkshire constituency, between his defection from the Liberal Party in 1888 and his defeat in the United Kingdom general election 1892, in the Glasgow Camlachie constituency.
Keir Hardie had also left the Liberal Party in order to help found the Scottish Labour Party, and like many of the party's members, had previously been involved in the Scottish Land Restoration League.
In 1893 the party dissolved itself into the Independent Labour Party.
