The Short Hill rises sharply from the
piedmont countryside of theLoudoun Valley northwest of Purcellville. The mountain ridge runs northeast for approximately three miles before falling toHillsboro Gap , through which the North Fork of the Catoctin Creek flows, and the town Hillsboro is located. The ridge then rises once again and continues 12 miles before dropping precipitously to thePotomac River .The portion of the mountain south of Hillsboro gap is known as Signal Mountain for the Union signaling station located on its summit during the
American Civil War .North of the Potomac, Short Hill Mountain continues as South Mountain in
Maryland andPennsylvania .The Short Hill is about 4 miles east of the main ridge of the Blue Ridge, which forms the western border of Loudoun County, and the valley in between the mountains is known as
Between the Hills and includes the villages of Loudoun Heights and Neersville.A small portion of the Short Hill on its western slope along the Potomac is owned by the
National Park Service to preserve the view down the Potomac fromHarpers Ferry . The rest of the mountain is in private hands and is by and large undeveloped. The only road crossing of the mountain is Va Rt 9 at Hillsboro.External links
