Elena Bechke

Elena Yurievna Bechke (Lang-ru|Елена Юрьевна Бечке; born January 7, 1966 in Saint Petersburg, Russia) is a Russian figure skater. She competed in pair skating for the former Soviet Union, the Unified Team, and Russia.

Bechke skated with Valery Kornienko from 1984 to 1987. One of their notable competitions was the 1986 European Championships, where they finished 3rd. [http://www.pairsonice.net/record.php?f=Bechke&m=Kornienko Elena Bechke & Valery Kornienko competition record] , accessed July 20, 2006.]

Bechke and Denis Petrov began skating together in 1987, and trained with the legendary Russian pairs coach Tamara Moskvina. Their first win was at the 1988 Trophée Lalique. They went on to win the bronze medal at the 1989 World Championships, silver medals at the 1991 and 1992 European Championships, and the silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games. They retired from amateur competition after the Winter Olympics.

Bechke and Petrov competed for several years as professionals. They won the World Professional Championships in 1996, as well as a number of other professional competitions in the mid- and late-1990s. They placed second at their last World Professional Championships, in 1999.

Bechke and Petrov were married in 1990, but divorced in 1995. They continued to skate together after their divorce, however. They toured with Stars on Ice for seven years (1994-2000), and also coached together in Virginia. She has remarried and started a family with husband Wayne Ellis. Their son was born in 2002. As of 2005, she is a coach in North Carolina.
