The airport is headquarters to the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces Eastern Command. The airport is also the base for two air regiments and fighter training centre:
- 1724th Interceptor Regiment
- 3710th Interceptor Squadron and Training
- 3840th Interceptor Squadron
- 34th Tactical Regiment
The base is home to Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23BN ground attack bombers and Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21. The base is also home to a general purpose transport squadron using Mil Mi-17 (4-6) and stored at one end of the airport.[3]
History
World War II
January 1, 1943 the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) set up postal operations for Levisa Bay using Army Post Office, Miami with the address: 4910 APO MIA. [4]
