John D. Roberts (b.
June 8 ,1918 ) is an award-winning Americanchemist . He has made contributions to the integration ofphysical chemistry ,spectroscopy andorganic chemistry for the understanding ofchemical reaction rates.Roberts received both a
B.A. (1941) andPh.D. (1944) from theUniversity of California, Los Angeles . He has held several positions at theCalifornia Institute of Technology , including Division Chairman of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from 1963-68, Dean of the Faculty from 1980-83 and is currently InstituteProfessor of Chemistry,Emeritus in the Division ofChemistry andChemical Engineering .Honors
Roberts was awarded the
Priestley Medal in 1987, theNational Medal of Science in 1990, theGlenn T. Seaborg Medal in 1991, theNAS Award in Chemical Sciences in 1999 and has received honorary degrees from theUniversity of Munich ,Temple University and theUniversity of Notre Dame .References
