Andrew James ("Swede") Oberlander (
February 17 1905 , January 1968 ) was an All-American halfback forDartmouth College's "Big Green" undefeated and national college championship football team in 1925. That year he passed for 14 touchdowns and ran for 12. In a 62-13 victory overCornell , Oberlander had 477 yards in total offense, including six touchdown passes, a Dartmouth record which still stands.Oberlander was assistant coach at
Ohio State 1926-29; and head coach atWesleyan University (CT) 1930-33. While at Wesleyan he commuted to Yale and received his M.D. fromYale School of Medicine .In
World War II , as a Lt. Commander (USNR) he was chief medical officer aboard theUSS Samar , in the Pacific fleet. When the war ended, many U.S. troops remained in the Far East awaiting transportation back to the States.Oberlander was head coach of the winning
Navy All-Stars beating the Army team 12-0 in theChina Bowl November 30 ,1945 , atShanghai .Later, Dr. Oberlander served as Medical Director for
National Life Insurance Co. of Vermont andPrudential Insurance Company inChicago and Newark.Oberlander was named to the
National College Football Hall of Fame class inducted in 1954.
