- Centennial High School (Franklin, Tennessee)
Centennial High School (CHS) is a public 9-12 high school in Franklin,
Tennessee .The high schools mascot is the cougars.=History=
Due to the overcrowding at nearby schools, the Williamson County School Board voted in 1994 to build a new high school located on newly built Mallory Lane near the
Cool Springs area of Franklin, TN. The new school was primarily built to relieve overcrowding at nearby Franklin and Brentwood High Schools. In August 2006, Centennial opened its doors, with Dan Covington serving as the school's first principal. As the County's population grew, Centennial began to suffer severe overcrowding concerns. By 2001, the school had just over 2000 students. As a result,
Ravenwood High School was opened in 2002. Soon after,Independence High School was opened in 2004. As a result, Centennial's student population had been cut by nearly 30% by 2007.In 1999, Centennial helped to create the "Be in the Click" program, encouraging students in Tennessee to wear their seatbelts while driving. This occurred after the number of students killed in traffic accidents in Williamson County skyrocketed in a 2 year span.
In 2002, it was announced that former Freedom Middle Principal J. Terry Schrader would take over Dan Covington as Principal of CHS.
In 2008, the school board voted to install a strict dress code for the 2008-2009 school year, the first public school in Williamson County to implement such a dress code. Although the school board officially listed that the purpose of the dress code was to "promote a better learning environmet," It was widely specualted that it was a response to the growing concern of gang violence in the Franklin area.
