Theodore Lewis "Ted" Bates (11 September 190130 May 1972) was an American advertising executive who founded a famous advertising agency that bears his name.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he attended Phillips-Andover Academy, then graduated from Yale University in 1924. He founded Ted Bates & Co. in 1940.

Background

Bates married Evelyn Turull of Havana, Cuba. They had twins, Patricia and Evelyn, whom later on became models. Patricia Bates married hotel entrepreneur Howard B. Johnson of Howard Johnson's hotels and restaurants. They had three children together: Howard, Marissa and Patricia. Howard now has two sons (Howard Jr. and Nash), Marissa has three children (Tyler, Paris, and Brittany Brock) and Patricia has two children as well (Nolan and Bates Crawford)

Ted Bates's principal avocation was a private thing. He was an ardent fisherman. Salmon, tarpon and bonefish were his specialties. Before Castro, he used to love to fish off the Isle of Pines near Cuba and he had stream in NewfoundlandFact|date=April 2008 and was part of cyndicate that had a stream in Maine.

He died on May 30, 1972, of a heart attack, which occurred while playing bridge with his friends. At the end of his life, he was a director and honorary chairman of the Ted Bates company, which ranked fifth in the world with annual billings of 425 million dollars(approximately 200 million dollars from United states accounts). In 1982, the American Advertising Federation (AAF) elected Bates along with Charles Brower and Bernice Fitz-Gibbon to the Advertising Hall of Fame which is the most prestigious lifetime achievement award in the advertising industry.
