A Presidio was a fortified base established by the Spanish in
North Africa during the16th century to protect againstpirate s, or a base held by Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries in Italy, mostly on the Tuscan coast (Piombino, Orbetello, Talamone, Porto Ercole & Porto Stefano, plus Porto Longone on Elba).
