Pyriform fossa

Pyriform fossa

The pyriform fossa is made up of two cavities behind the laryngeal ventricle. It is involved in speech. These cavities are located on either side of the Glottic Opening and form the lateral borders of the Larynx (i.e. it is the space between the thyroid cartilage laterally, the ary-epiglottic fold, and the related membrane medially).

Items often get lodged here on their way into the oesophagus, causing choking.

Deep to the mucous membrane of the pyriform fossa lies the internal laryngeal nerve, branch of the superior laryngeal nerve. This nerve supplies sensation to thisarea and may become damaged if the mucous membrane is punctured by foreign body.
