M. P. Veerendra Kumar (Malayalam:എം.പി. വീരേന്ദ്രകുമാര്‍ Kannada:ಎಮ್ .ಪಿ. ವೀರೇಂದ್ರ ಕುಮಾರ) is a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represents the Calicut constituency of Kerala and is a member of the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) political party. He is the chairman and Managing editor of the Malayalam daily "Mathrubhumi". He is also the president of Kerala state unit of the political party called Janata Dal.

Born to Smt. Marudevi Avva and Sri. Padmaprabha Gowder on 22nd July 1936, after schooling in birthplace Kalpetta and Kozhikode, he did his Masters in Philosophy from Vivekananda College, Madras. Secured Masters in Business Administration from Cincinnati University, Ohio, U.S.A .Was inducted into the socialist movement by the legendary Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan at the tender age of 15. Actively involved in politics since then and is a dominating presence in the public life of Kerala.

An active politician. Was all India Treasurer and national committee member of the erstwhile Samyukta Socialist Party ,state secretary of the Kerala Unit of the Socialist Party ,Was one of the All India Secretaries of the erstwhile Socialist Party, Convener of the Opposition Co-ordination Committee in Kerala, Vice President of the erstwhile Janata Party, Kerala State Committee and its President. He Was arrested during the emergency. Currently he is the President of Janata Dal, Kerala State Committee.During 1987-91 he was elected member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.Later 1996 he was elected to the Indian parliament-lok sabha- from kozhikode consttuency and functioned as Minister of state for Labour and later Finance.Media

He took charge as Managing Director of the Mathrubhumi Printing & Publishing Company Ltd., Kozhikode on 11th November 1979. With twelve editions and 9 periodicals, Mathrubhumi is among the largest publishing houses in the country. The periodicals from the house of the Mathrubhumi address issues and concerns close to the heart of Malayalee society.Author

Author of twelve titles in Malayalam, is credited with enlightening Malayalees about the terms of GATT and WTO pacts as well as the multinational agenda on water. The work 'Ramante Dukham' has created publishing history in Malayalam going into 18 re-prints . 'Amazonum Kure Vyakulathakalum' has created a new genre of writing in Malayalam fusing travelogue, ecology and philosophical contemplation and has won the Sahitya Academy Award.
