next_route=13K-12 was a
state highway in theU.S. state ofKansas , created in the mid-1980 s. Its alignment was changed during its existence.History
K-12 was commissioned when the first section of the current K-10 freeway was completed from K-7 in
Olathe, Kansas to I-435 inLenexa, Kansas . K-10, at the time, overlapped K-7 from Olathe north toShawnee Mission Parkway .When the K-10 freeway segment from Lawrence to Olathe was completed, K-10 was signed for the entire length (both sections) of the expressway, and K-12 was displaced.
When K-10 was designated on the expressway between Lawrence and Lenexa, K-12 was realigned north to take the place of the former K-10 alignment. It followed
Shawnee Mission Parkway from K-7 inShawnee, Kansas . It turned north onMerriam Drive inMerriam, Kansas , which follows intoKansas City, Kansas . Merriam Lane turns into Southwest Blvd. near US-169, and K-12 ended not far east at theMissouri state line.Since K-12 existed entirely within the city limits of the cities it traverses, it was turned back to the cities in
1992 according to KDOT policy.cite web|url=http://www.route56.com/highways/highways.cgi?hwy1=12&hist=1|last=Kennedy|first=Richie|work=Kansas Highways 7.0|title=Kansas Highways Routelog|accessdate=2007-06-07]References
