- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology
Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) is a premier national level research laboratory under the
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). IICT conducts research in basic and applied chemistry and biochemistry. It is located inHyderabad, India .Mandate
* To carry out research and development work in the field of chemical technology, to develop process/products/designs and engineering know-how based on utilization of indigenous raw materials/resources/skills
* To provide S&T inputs to the industrial and economic development of the country by:
** improving the efficiency of existing plants
** providing technical consultancy services
** providing analysis and testing services
* To advise the government, as when required, in areas where the institute has developed technical expertise
* To carry out basic research in areas of chemistry and chemical technologyR&D Programmes
The R&D programmes of IICT relate to the development of technologies for pesticides, drugs, organic intermediates, fine chemicals, catalysts, polymers and organic coatings, utilization of low-grade coals, and value-added products from vegetable oils. Process design and mechanical engineering design form an integral part of technology development and transfer. IICT is also actively engaged in basic research in organic synthesis and catalyses.
Rural Technologies
Name of Product/ Process: Simple IT tool for rapid identification of mosquito species of rural origin for vector control
The technology is used for accurate identification of principal mosquito vector in rural endemic areas for designing suitable control measures of vector-borne diseases like malaria, filaria, Japanese encephalitis, dengue fever etc.
In developing countries like India, classification and identification of the mosquito species from rural endemic areas are of paramount importance. The WHO monograph which describes the taxonomic data in the form of a pictorial key is generally difficult to understand by a non-taxonomist. Keeping in view this difficulty, a novel software has been developed which is user-friendly, menu-driven and even a novice can make use of it. The software is available on floppy disk and can be ported on available diskettes. The package can be successfully used in mosquito control programs in rural areas. Rapid identification and greater accuracy are the salient features of the technology.
