Alfred Portale is the chef and owner of "Gotham Bar and Grill" in Manhattan. Gotham Bar and Grill opened in 1984, Portale became Chef in 1985 taking the restaurant to new heights with his beautiful plating and his insistence on high quality ingredients. He is part of the New American Cuisine movement.

Opening in October of 2008, Gotham Steak at the Fountainebleau in Miami.

He appeared as a guest judge on the episode of Top Chef originally broadcast on June 27, 2007.

Portale's first sous-chef at Gotham was Tom Valenti. Notable chefs who have worked at Gotham: Bill Telepan, Wiley Dufresne, Tom Colicchio and Christopher Lee. Current Chef de Cuisine is Adam Longworth
