High Speed Electric Locomotive

High Speed Electric Locomotive

The High Speed Electric Locomotive (often abbreviated as HSEL) is an electric locomotive rated at 6250 horsepower. Amtrak currently operates all 40 of these locomotives on its twenty Acela Express trainsets.

History

The High Speed Electric Locomotive was originally conceived as the power car for Bombardier's "American Flyer" proposal for a high-speed Northeast Corridor service. After Bombardier won the contract for the high-speed trainsets, Amtrak changed the marketing name to the current "Acela".
