It is operated by the Alamo Public Telecommunications Council (formerly the Southwest Texas Public Broadcasting Council).The station also serves as the default PBS member station for the Laredo market, which doesn't have an PBS station of its own.
It signed on in September 1962, serving both San Antonio, and
Austin, Texas , from a studio on the campus of theUniversity of Texas at Austin .By 1984, Austin would gain their own public television station in the form of
KLRU (which was a KLRN satellite from 1979 through 1984), and KLRN, with its own studios in San Antonio, became fully associated with the Alamo City.Digital television

Some of the notable programs produced (in the Austin studio) by KLRN over the years included "
Carrascolendas " and "Villa Alegre", both 1970s children's programs about Hispanic culture. KLRN also produced "Austin City Limits " until 1984, when KLRU split off from KLRN.Trivia
