Sequoyah High School is a public high school located in Canton, Georgia educating students in grades 9-12. Opened in the fall of 1990, the school is in its eighteenth year of existence. It is one of five high schools in Cherokee County.

The school is informally located in the small neighborhood of Hickory Flat on a three-school plot of land dubbed the Ralph Bunche Center, consisting of Hickory Flat Elementary, Dean Rusk Middle, and Sequoyah High schools. This center is placed on the northwest block of the intersection of East Cherokee Drive and Hickory Road.

Preliminary schools in the Sequoyah cluster are Arnold Mill, Free Home, Hickory Flat, Mountain Road, Macedonia, and Johnston elementaries, and Dean Rusk Middle School. School enrollment was 1,648 students for the class of 2008. Sequoyah was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2005, the only high school in Georgia to receive that honor, and also received the award in 2006. It also was named a Georgia School of Excellence in 2005.

In athletics the school participates in Classification AAAA, Region/Area 7. In only its eighteenth year, Sequoyah holds state titles in basketball (1994, 1996) and wrestling (1996, 1999) and also in softball (2006).

Academics

Sequoyah High School offers a broad range of academic courses and studies, having one of, if not the largest Advanced Placement program in Cherokee County. Students are offered a College Preparatory Diploma study path or a Technical Preparatory study path, with one option mixing the two. Students are recommended the following courses to obtain the needed 22 credits needed to satisfy the Cherokee County Board of Education's requirements for high school graduation.

"Sequoyah volleyball has had a great history around the state of Georgia. In 2003, the Lady Chiefs recorded a record of 48-9, and won the Area 6 championship. After making their mark in regional play, the Lady Chiefs finished as the state AAAAA runner-up under head coach Kelly Audia to round out the season. The team lost to St. Vincent's School in the state championship match and finished 2nd in Class AAAAA. Sequoyah then received a preseason #1 rank for the 2004 season. Volleyball powerhouse Starr's Mill and Sequoyah made it the final match, and the Chiefs lost 3-2, finishing runner-up for the second consecutive year."

"Sequoyah wrestling, led by Higgins, gained national recognition in the 90s. It was ranked 5th, 7th, 8th, and 6th (twice) due to the records set in a single season between the years 1996 and 2000. They have been the state traditional champions twice since the school opened in 1990. In the 1996 season, behind the individual champions Wyatt Wilkie (112), Shinya Coulter (135), Lonnie Jones (160), and Geoff Jones (189) the team won its first state title in Class AAAA. Just a few seasons later, another brother stepped up to the plate as Justin Wilkie (130) and Leslie Morrow (112) won their individual brackets and led the team to a state championship in AAAA in 1999."

2006-2007 Athletic Recap

*Volleyball finished #6 in AAAA (40-10) after losing to the eventual state champion, Marist, in the Elite 8. Season highlights would also include: Cherokee County champions, Area 5-AAAA champions.

*Softball won the State AAAA Championship title on October 31, 2006, defeating Northgate High School. Season highlights would also include: Region 5-AAAA champions, beating cross-county rival, Cherokee.

*Football advanced to the State playoffs and lost to Dacula in the first round. Region runner-up East Paulding was in the semifinals at the Georgia Dome. Season highlights would also include: Beating rival Cherokee 10-3, advancing to the postseason for 6 out of the last 7 years.

*Cross country advanced to the State Championships and finished 16th in Class AAAA. Season highlights would also include: #4 in Region 5-AAAA, #9 at Last Chance Invitational, making it to the postseason for the first time since 2001.

*Basketball the Chiefs went 10-13, while the Lady Chiefs finished the season 20-9 and advanced to the State tournament, losing in the first round to Region 8-AAAA Champion Madison County. Season highlights: Girls beating rival Cherokee on their 50th Anniversary night.

*Wrestling was ranked preaseason #8 in AAAA. The Chiefs have fallen out of the top 10 due to their loss of three-time state champion Carrington and two-time Bradley Banks who transferred to Union Grove. An equally important loss was that of Chad Mitchell, defending AAAAA state champion in 125 who now wrestles for Parkview, the reigning state champions. They finished 19th in Class AAAA.

*Girls soccer had a stellar season, finishing 18-2 after a trip to the Sweet Sixteen of the Class AAAA State playoffs. After taking titles as Region 5-AAAA and Cherokee County champions, the Lady Chiefs put eight players on the All-Cherokee County team for the Cherokee Tribune. .

*Boys soccer went 19-1 this past season and won the Region 5-AAAA and Cherokee County championships, and advanced to the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs, falling 3-2 to Marist at home. Forward Sam Muza was named the Cherokee County Player of the Year, and was named to the All-Cherokee County first team along with four others.

*Baseball went 20-8, and at the end of the 2007 regular season the Chiefs held a state ranking of #9 in Class AAAA and fell to the Loganville Red Devils in the first round of the state playoff tournament.

*Golf the Lady Chiefs golf team won the Region 5-AAAA championship and advanced to the Class AAAA State tournament this season for the first time in school history. They enjoyed a strong finish ranked #6 in Class AAAA.

*Track in overall points placed 3rd in Cherokee County, and 8th in Region 5-AAAA.

*Tennis finished the season 10-7, placed 2nd in Cherokee County, 3rd in Region 5-AAAA, and enjoyed a trip to the second round of the AAAA State tennis tournament.
