Founded in 1912 as "Kelvin Technical High School", the name was later shortened to "Kelvin High School". The original school building was replaced by the present one in
1964 . Until the1995 -96 school year the school housed only grade 10, 11 and 12 students; a grade 9 program was introduced at the beginning of the1995 -96 school year. As per Department of Education guidelines,special education students were integrated into Kelvin's student body the same year.Academics
In addition to a standard high school curriculum, Kelvin High School offers a French Immersion Program (grades 9 through 12), as well as the IB Program (grades 10 through 12). Kelvin offers a wide variety of courses which include, but are not limited to: Mathematics, English, Health, Social Studies, Geography, History, Chemistry, Physics, Art, Band (Music), Choir, Drama, Digital Animation Studio, Graphics, Asia Pacific Studies, Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Design, Woodworking, and Computer Sciences.
Kelvin is the last public high school in Manitoba to offer
Asia Pacific Studies Fact|date=May 2007. This course is for any students interested in class credit for the study of the Asia Pacific Rim nations.Athletics
Kelvin's Athletic programs are very prominent in the school environment, with many students either participating in or supporting the many teams, which range from hockey to basketball to football.

Kelvin is widely regarded as a very environmentally aware schoolFact|date=May 2007, because of its globally recognized
environmentalist student/teacher organization, called "HASTA" (Hopeful, Aware, Students, Taking Action). This certified group has been in existence for many years, and takes action on the subjects of environment, politics, resources, world issues, andhuman rights . The group works in conjunction withAmnesty International , and holds after-school meetings to organize events, fund-raisers, and writing workshops. A number of Kelvin High School students enlisted to fight in
World War II , more than fifty of whom were killed in action, inspiring the 2005 documentary, "The Boys of Kelvin High: Canadians in Bomber Command". The documentary was produced by Cliff Chadderton, a distinguishedCanadian Forces infantrycommander . Chadderton himself is a Kelvin High School alumnus. It honours the Kelvin students from Winnipeg who, even at their incredibly young ages, served in WW2.International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
