Kelvin High School is a public high school, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

History

Founded in 1912 as "Kelvin Technical High School", the name was later shortened to "Kelvin High School". The original school building was replaced by the present one in 1964. Until the 1995-96 school year the school housed only grade 10, 11 and 12 students; a grade 9 program was introduced at the beginning of the 1995-96 school year. As per Department of Education guidelines, special education students were integrated into Kelvin's student body the same year.

Academics

In addition to a standard high school curriculum, Kelvin High School offers a French Immersion Program (grades 9 through 12), as well as the IB Program (grades 10 through 12). Kelvin offers a wide variety of courses which include, but are not limited to: Mathematics, English, Health, Social Studies, Geography, History, Chemistry, Physics, Art, Band (Music), Choir, Drama, Digital Animation Studio, Graphics, Asia Pacific Studies, Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Design, Woodworking, and Computer Sciences.

Athletics

Kelvin's Athletic programs are very prominent in the school environment, with many students either participating in or supporting the many teams, which range from hockey to basketball to football.

Environmentalism

Kelvin is widely regarded as a very environmentally aware schoolFact|date=May 2007, because of its globally recognized environmentalist student/teacher organization, called "HASTA" (Hopeful, Aware, Students, Taking Action). This certified group has been in existence for many years, and takes action on the subjects of environment, politics, resources, world issues, and human rights. The group works in conjunction with Amnesty International, and holds after-school meetings to organize events, fund-raisers, and writing workshops. They have been recognized by the federal government along with other international associates.

The documentary was produced by Cliff Chadderton, a distinguished Canadian Forces infantry commander. Chadderton himself is a Kelvin High School alumnus. It honours the Kelvin students from Winnipeg who, even at their incredibly young ages, served in WW2.
