As of 2001[update] India census[1], Mecheri had a population of 21,020. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mecheri has an average literacy rate of 59%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 66%, and female literacy is 50%. In Mecheri, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Now the town become more populated due to JSW (www.jindalsteel.com) Steel Factory and THE KAVERY ENGINEERING COLLEGE. More famous about Hand loom silks export business.
