Jamai is a city and a municipality in Chhindwara district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Geography

Jamai is located at coord|22.2|N|78.58|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/35/Jamai.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Jamai] ] . It has an average elevation of 748 metres (2454 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Jamai had a population of 22,426. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Jamai has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 69%. In Jamai, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Religious Importance

The first step to famous Chhota Mahadev pilgrimage is supposed to be located in Jamai (the place where the step is located is known as Junnardeo - a part of Jamai). Pilgrims cross seven hills (famously called Saat Pahadiyan) to reach Chhota Mahadev.

Places to Visit

1. Patalkot (83 km from Jamai, it is a village situated between a number of hills in a valley. Sun light touches the village only for an hour during the noon).2. Amoni Samoni (Approx. 50 km from Jamai, famous for its hot and cold water reservoirs - created due to high quantity of Sulpher in the water.) Its also famous for a religious fair held every year on "Makar Sankranti" 14th January.
