Jalakandapuram is a panchayat town in the Salem district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Geography

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Jalakandapuram had a population of 14,116. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Jalakandapuram has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 63%. In Jalakandapuram, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. A significant section of the population belongs to the Kannada Devanga community, Vanniyar Community and Nadar Community.

Jalakandapuram is famous for weaving, especially sarees, which are exported around India.

Local festivals reflect Tamilian culture. Notable ones are Ramalinga Sowdesweri Amman festival, annual mariamman festivals which are held in March/April, Soorasamharam in November. There are very booming for Modern textile machines and products. The town's main industry is weaving, on handlooms and powerlooms and textile mills. Cotton, ragi and cornflowers are grown here. Dairy farms are also a mainstay of the town's economy.There are 2 lakes. One lake is near a Soundamman temple and a Kaliamman temple.

Temples in the Area

Jalakandapuram is known for its temples; notable examples are Ramalinga Sowdesweri Amman for Great "Maha shakthi Soundamman". A Maha Kumbhabhishekam was held in June '07 for Malayampalayam "Ramalinga Sowdesweri Amman Temple". There is also a Kalyana Subramaniya Swamy temple for Lord Muruga. A Maha Kumbhabhishekam is held in the month of June.

There are three temples devoted to the goddess Soundamman, three temples for the goddess Mariamman, one Lord Shiva temple owned by Malayampalayam Kannada Devanger's family and one temple of Lord Hanuman in the town.
