KGWC-TV channel 14 is the local CBS affiliate for Casper, Wyoming, owned by Mark III Media. Programming is repeated on its satellite stations, KGWL-TV channel 5 in Lander, and KGWR-TV channel 13 in Rock Springs.Unlike most CBS affiliates, KGWC does not produce any local news.

Operations for the three stations are based in Casper, in the same studios as ABC affiliate KTWO-TV and FOX affiliate KFNB.

History

KGWC signed on in 1980 as KCWY-TV, the second television station in western Wyoming. It changed its calls to KGWC in 1986. The KCWY calls are now located on channel 13 in Casper. KGWR began in 1977 as KTUX-TV, became KWWY-TV in 1982 and KGWR in 1986. KGWL began as KOWY in 1982 and became KGWL in 1986. The three stations were grouped together as the "Wyoming News Network" until 2002, when they became semi-satellites of KGWN-TV, the CBS affiliate in Cheyenne.

The stations' operation as KGWN semi-satellites would be short lived, as in 2003, Chelsey Broadcasting sold the KGWN stations in two separate sales. KGWN and Scottsbluff, Nebraska satellite KSTF were sold to SagamoreHill Broadcasting, while KGWC, KGWL, and KGWR were sold separately to Mark III. After a lengthy approval process at the Federal Communications Commission due to several objections to the sale, Mark III officially consummated the sale on May 31, 2006. The two station groups no longer share resources and are not affiliated with one another.

KGWC is one of the few stations in the country that signs off at night every night. It goes off the air at 12:30 am, after "The Late Late Show." Its repeaters KGWL and KGWR stay on air, but often feature frozen pictures of programming on the station.

KGWC will flash cut to digital service in February of 2009.
