KGWN-TV, also known as CBS News Channel 5, is a CBS affiliated television station licensed to Cheyenne, Wyoming. The station broadcasts in analog on channel 5 (VHF) and in digital on channel 30 (UHF). It is owned by SagamoreHill Broadcasting.

KSTF in Scottsbluff, Nebraska is a satellite station of KGWN which broadcasts in analog on channel 10 (VHF) and in digital on channel 29 (UHF). It is also owned by SagamoreHill.

KGWN uses the slogan "The Tri-State's News Leader", as the two stations cover southeastern Wyoming, northern Colorado and western Nebraska.

History

KGWN signed on the air in 1954 as KFBC-TV, owned by the McCraken family along with the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle newspaper and KFBC radio. It is Wyoming's oldest television station. For many years, it was the only commercial station in eastern Wyoming, and as such carried programming from all four major networks. The station was primarily an ABC affiliate, as was the radio station.

In 1975, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that if a city had only one newspaper, one television station, one AM radio station and one FM radio station, they could not be owned by the same person. The McCrakens' media holdings were one of only a few covered by this ruling. They opted to keep the Tribune-Eagle and KFBC-TV and sold the radio stations. Since the radio side was the original licensee, the TV station became KYCU-TV. The McCrakens in turn sold KYCU to Stauffer Communications in 1987, who switched its call sign to KGWN. NBC programs appeared sporadically until 1987, when KKTU (now KQCK) signed on as a satellite of KTWO-TV in Casper. ABC programming disappeared from the schedule by 1988. Today the station continues as a CBS affiliate.

When Stauffer and Morris Communications merged in 1996, KGWN and most of the rest of Stauffer's television holdings went to Benedek Broadcasting. Benedek went bankrupt in 2001 (it merged with Gray Television a year later), and KGWN went to Chelsey Broadcasting. In 2003, the station (along with KSTF) was sold to SagamoreHill Broadcasting.

KSTF, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, signed on in August 1955. In time it had a rare problem of its own to deal with. In 1958, KOTA-TV in Rapid City, South Dakota, put its own satellite station on the air in Scottsbluff, KDUH. During the next 18 years, there was a great amount of confusion among Scottsbluff viewers, especially when the two stations aired the same program simultaneously. Both stations had unusual "joint primary" affiliations with both ABC and CBS, from 1965 onwards, and although KFBC/KSTF slightly favored ABC and KOTA/KDUH slightly favored CBS, that didn't help the duplication problem. The duplication problem finally ended on July 11, 1976, when KEVN opened in Rapid City and took over that market's CBS affiliation. KYCU/KSTF took advantage of the situation and devoted more of its time to CBS programming until it became a full-time affiliate in 1988.

KSTF aired its own newscasts and many local programs for many years. However, its local operations were progressively cut back from the 1990s onward until late 2004, when Sagamore Hill shut down KSTF's local newscasts. The station is now a semi-satellite of KGWN, except for commercials.

From December 1963, KGWN also had another satellite, KTVS in Sterling, Colorado, which served northeastern Colorado. In September 1999, Benedek sold KTVS to Newsweb, who made it a satellite of Denver's KTVD. The station now operates as America One affiliate KCDO.

KGWN-TV also operated three other semi-satellites: KGWC-TV in Casper, Wyoming; KGWR-TV in Rock Springs, Wyoming; and KGWL-TV in Lander, Wyoming. In 2003, Chelsey Broadcasting agreed to sell KGWC, KGWR and KGWL to Mark III Media, a group that included former KTWO General Manager Mark Nalbone. After the FCC dismissed several objections to the sale, Mark III consummated the agreement to buy KGWC, KGWR and KGWL on May 31, 2006.

The CW

In September 2006, KGWN began carrying programming from The CW Television Network on digital subchannel 5.2. Later the subchannel was changed to a simulcast of KGWN's main programming with the exception of the 10 p.m. newscast. CW programming continues to be seen on Cheyenne-area cable systems.

Northern Colorado 5

In September 2008, the station began broadcasting a weeknight, 10 p.m. newscast targeted to Northern Colorado. Branded "Northern Colorado 5" the newscast is available on subchannel 5.2 as well as some Northern Colorado cable systems.
