- Voiceless alveolar lateral fricative
The voiceless alveolar lateral fricative is a type of
consonant al sound, used in some spokenlanguage s. The symbol in theInternational Phonetic Alphabet that represents voiceless dental, alveolar, and postalveolar fricatives is IPA|ɬ, and the equivalentX-SAMPA symbol is K. The symbol IPA|ɬ is called "belted l" and should not be confused with "l with tilde", IPA| [ɫ] , which corresponds to a different sound, thevelarized alveolar lateral approximant . It should also be distinguished from a voicelessalveolar lateral approximant , although the fricative is sometimes incorrectly described as a "voiceless l", a description fitting only of the approximant. The sound is relatively rare among the world's languages. It is common amongNative American languages , such as Navajo. Features of the voiceless alveolar lateral fricative:
* Its
manner of articulation is fricative, which means it is produced by constricting air flow through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causingturbulence .
* Itsplace of articulation is alveolar, which means it is articulated with either the tip or the blade of the tongue against thealveolar ridge , termed respectively "apical" and "laminal".
* Itsphonation type is voiceless, which means it is produced without vibrations of the vocal cords.
* It is anoral consonant , which means air is allowed to escape through the mouth.
* It is alateral consonant , which means it is produced by allowing the airstream to flow over the sides of the tongue, rather than the middle of the tongue.
* Theairstream mechanism ispulmonic egressive , which means it is articulated by pushing air out of thelung s and through the vocal tract, rather than from theglottis or the mouth.Occurrence
