George Walker (soldier)

George Walker (c.1618 – 1690) was an Anglo-Irish soldier and Anglican priest , known as the "Defender of Derry".

Family

George Walker was born around 1618 in Co. Tyrone, Ireland. He was the son of George Walker, rector of Kilmore and Chancellor of Armagh (died 1677), and Ursula Stanhope, daughter of Sir John Stanhope of Melwood. Walker was educated at Glasgow University. He married Isabella Maxwell of Finnebrogue, by whom he had several sons. [Classic Encyclopedia] There are many descendants of George Walker living in Ireland, Great Britain, and the United States.

Siege of Derry

A Doctor of Divinity, Walker was joint Governor of Derry along with Robert Lundy during the Siege of Derry in 1689 and received the thanks of the House of Commons for his work.

He was killed in action at the Battle of the Boyne on July 1 1690, whilst going to the aid of Frederic Schomberg, Commander-in-Chief of all English forces in Ireland, who was wounded during the crossing of the river. He is buried in Castlecaufield, County Tyrone.
