List of treecats

This article lists notable treecat characters in the fictional Honorverse universe in which treecats are a sentient species,

Both "human name" and ("treecat name") are given where known. Note that treecat names have been long unknown to humans, as have the names treecats use for humans who have bonded. Human names are given to treecats by their humans when they bond; the act has acquired considerable significance to both treecats and their humans. The human names given by Honor Harrington to unbonded treecats illustrate both her keen interest in naval history (including ancient 'wet navy' history), her attempt to take into account their individual personalities, and an attempt to keep several treecats in the same space straight, humans being without any ability to directly perceive personality. Generally, treecats are given their human name by their adopted human partner.

A

; Achilles : One of the kittens in Nimitz and Samantha's first "litter". He and his siblings (Andromeda, Cassandra, and Jason) are the first treecat kittens ever to live with humans from birth. They are also the first kittens ever to leave Sphinx. Honor Harrington named him shortly after birth. He is unbonded to any human, being too young.

; Andromeda : One of Nimitz and Samantha's first litter. She and her siblings (Achilles, Cassandra, and Jason) are the first treecat kittens ever to live with humans from birth. They are also the first kittens ever to leave Sphinx. Honor Harrington named her shortly after birth. She is unbonded to any human, being too young.

; Ariel ("Leaf Catcher") : Bonded to Elizabeth Adrienne Samantha Annette Winton ("Soul of Steel"), Queen Elizabeth III of the Star Kingdom of Manticore.

; Artemis : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Athena, Farragut, Hera, Hipper, Hood, Nelson, and Togo). Honor Harrington named her in an attempt to match personality with name, even though she remains unbonded to a human.

; Athena : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Artemis, Farragut, Hera, Hipper, Hood, Nelson, and Togo). Honor Harrington named her in an attempt of match personality with name, even though she remains unbonded.

B

; Banshee : He bonded with RMN Commander Roslee Orndorff, and doesn't seem to have minded having a "female" human name. Perhaps he was unaware of the name's connotations.

C

; Cassandra : One of Nimitz and Samantha's first litter. She and her siblings (Achilles, Andromeda, and Jason) are the first treecat kittens ever to live with humans from birth. They are also the first kittens ever to leave Sphinx. Honor Harrington named her shortly after birth. She is unbonded to any human, being too young.

; ("Climbs Quickly") : see Lionheart

D

; Dianchect ("Seeker of Dreams", formerly "Tree Dancer") : From Red Leaves Dancing Clan. He bonded to Crown Princess (later Queen) Adrienne Winton. He is historically important as the first treecat to adopt a member of the Star Kingdom of Manticore's Royal Family. Although very young at the time, he strongly desired to find a human partner, resulting in his name change to "Seeker of Dreams". His story is recounted in "What Price Dreams?".

F

; Farragut : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Artemis Athena, Hera, Hipper, Hood, Nelson, and Togo). Honor Harrington named him in an attempt to match personality with name. He bonded to Miranda LaFollett becoming the first treecat to adopt a Grayson citizen.

; Fisher ("Swift Striker") : Bonded to Dr. Scott MacDallan ("Darkness Foe"). Historically significant as one of the first human-treecat bondings and the first attempt of the treecats trying to communicate information to humans. They bonded while saving MacDallan's life after a fishing accident as recounted in "The Stray".

G

; Genghis : Bonded to Judson Van Hale, member of a Torch security team. Both died in the neurotoxin assassination attempt on the leadership of Torch, including Queen Berry, Princess Ruth, Thandi Palane, Jeremy X, and WEB du Havel.

; ("Golden Voice") : see Samantha

H

; Hera : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Artemis Athena, Farragut, Hipper, Hood, Nelson, and Togo). Honor Harrington named her in an attempt to match personality with name even though she is unbonded to any human.

; Hipper : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Artemis, Athena, Farragut, Hera, Hood, Nelson, and Togo). Honor Harrington named him in an attempt to match personality and name. Bonded to Rachel Mayhew (then 11 T-years old) the eldest daughter of Benjamin IX, Protector of Grayson. He was the second treecat to adopt a Grayson citizen.

; Hood : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Artemis, Athena, Farragut, Hera, Hipper, Nelson, and Togo). Honor Harrington named him in an attempt to match personality with name, even though he is unbonded to any human.

J

; Jason : One of Nimitz and Samantha's first litter. He and his siblings (Achilles, Andromeda, and Cassandra) are the first treecat kittens ever to live with humans from birth. They are also the first kittens ever to leave Sphinx. Honor Harrington named him shortly after birth. He is unbonded to any human, being too young.

L

; ("Laughs Brightly") : see Nimitz

; ("Leaf Catcher") : see Ariel

; Lionheart ("Climbs Quickly") : He bonded with Stephanie Harrington ("Death Fang's Bane"), an ancestor of Honor Harrington, in the first human-treecat bonding. After he saved Stephanie's life from an attacking hexapuma (after an incapacitating hang-gliding accident), Stephanie saved his after he became injured during the individual battle with the hexapuma. Previously, no one (treecat or human) had been aware of the possibility of nor the depth of the bond that could be established between members of the two species. His story is recounted in "A Beautiful Friendship".

M

; Monroe : He bonded with King Roger III and then (re-)bonded to Prince Consort Justin Zyrr-Winton (fiancee of Elizabeth III) very shortly after Roger's death.

N

; Nelson : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Artemis, Athena, Farragut, Hera, Hipper, Hood, and Togo). Honor Harrington named him in an attempt to match personality to a name, even though he is unbonded to any human.

; Nimitz ("Laughs Brightly") : Scout of Bright Water Clan; bonded to (RMN and GSN) Admiral Lady Dame Honor Harrington ("Dances on Clouds"), Dutchess Harrington and Steadholder Harrington, during her adolescence. Half of the first mated pair of treecats ever to be bonded to humans. About 65cm long (not including tail), weight nine kilos. Nimitz and Samantha's first kittens were Achilles, Andromeda, Cassandra, and Jason; they decided to both raise them with humans, but also to emigrate with the kittens to Grayson. These treecat kittens were the first ever to live with humans from birth, as well as the first kittens ever to leave Sphinx. After he was injured in a fight, Nimitz lost his "'mind-voice'" and thus could no longer 'speak' telepathically with other treecats. Allison Harrington suggested teaching treecats sign language, or hand signing, so that he could talk with his wife Samantha. An added benefit of this form of communication was that it allowing treecats and humans to communicate as well, thus revolutionizing inter-species relations.

O

; Odysseus : Bonded to RMN Admiral Aristophones Georgides.

S

; Samantha ("Golden Voice") : Originally of Sun Leaf Clan, adopted into Bright Water Clan after her bond to Nimitz. She first bonded to RMN Lt Cmdr (Engineering) Harold Tschu ("Hunter of Stars"). Shortly after she became Nimitz' mate, Tschu was killed in action. She later (re-)bonded to RMN Admiral Hamish Alexander, Earl White Haven, ("Strong Heart"). Nimitz and Samantha's first kittens were Achilles, Andromeda, Cassandra, and Jason. These treecat kittens were the first ever to live with humans from birth, as well as the first kittens ever to leave Sphinx. Samantha is unique, or innovative, in several ways: 1) the first memory singer ever to bond to a human, 2) the first memory singer ever to leave Sphinx, 3) one of the few female treecats to adopt a human at all, 4) one of the very few (only 7 prior to her) females ever to adopt someone other than a Sphinx Forestry Service Ranger, 5) half of the first mated pair of treecats ever to be bonded to humans, 6) one of the few treecats to not die or suicide when her human bonded partner died, and 7) one of the few treecats to adopt a second human after the death of their first bonded partner.

; ("Seeker of Dreams") : see Dianchect

; ("Sings Truly") : Member of Bright Water Clan. She was "Climbs Quickly's" sister and a memory singer. One of the most important treecats in "The People's" history. She suggested, and carried to adoption by The People, the policy for interacting with humans successfully followed for several hundred years. Inter-species bonding became "The People's" strategy to cope with and learn from and about humans while concealing "The People's" true intelligence and abilities. A part of her story is recounted in A Beautiful Friendship.

; ("Singer from Silence") : Became a member of the Bright Water Clan to more easily study humans. She was a memory singer who lost the ability to receive telepathic communications after an injury. She was still capable of sending telepathic communications and of mutual telempathy with other treecats. She studied human use of verbal language in hopes of learning to fully communicate again. After learning some of the concepts of verbal speech, including the basic idea of a word as a symbol, she was able to transmit this knowledge to all "The People". Not only did this allow treecats to start understanding human "'mouth-noises'", but it also paved the way for treecats to learn hand signing.

; ("Swift Striker") : see Fisher

T

; Togo : Member of Nimitz' Bright Water Clan. One of the first adult treecats ever to leave Sphinx to live elsewhere as a group (together with Artemis, Athena, Farragut, Hera, Hipper, Hood, and Nelson). Honor Harrington named him in an attempt to match personality with a name, even though he was unbonded to a human.

;("Tree Dancer") : see Dianchect

; ("True Stalker") : Bonded to Arvin Erhardt, saved Scott MacDallan's life at the cost of his own after Erhardt was killed. His story is recounted in "The Stray".

U

; unknown name : The only treecat Manpower Inc was able to kidnap, died quickly in captivity on Mesa.
