Dutty Wine

Dutty Wine

"Dutty Wine" is a head dance. There are several Dancers in Jamaica who claim they were its creator. Although there is proof in a video with one of the crowned Dancehall Queens named Mad Michelle first performing the dance in front of a crowd.[1] The Dutty Wine is also a song by dancehall artist Tony Matterhorn.

Dutty Wine Culture

Although Dancehall Queen Mad Michelle is a possible creator of the Dutty Wine the packaged concept of the Dutty Wine came from a trio in Montego Bay Named The Attitude Girls.[2] Dancehall Queen Shalara Gayle of The Attitude Girls is most famous for doing the fastest and longest Dutty Wine Dance [3][4]

The Dance

The dance involves the rotating movement of the neck.[1] You can also move your legs like a bird, whilst simultaneously rotating your wrists and neck and posterior. Sometimes more advanced dancers will also include the splits in their Dutty Wine. It is not done by ordinary people in Jamaica where it originated. Only by females who are known dancers or Dancehall Queens.[5] The dance experienced a surge of popularity around the world, especially in Jamaican communities in parts of the United Kingdom and North America. Some even have gone so far as to label it as "the dance craze" of 2006.[6]

Doctor's Warnings

Some doctors have warned against performing the Dutty Wine, claiming it may cause serious muscle trauma, and ligament damage.[7]
