It was founded in 1984 by Brian McHugh as a 'free sheet' advertiser, with some local news. It is now part of the Thomas Crosbie Holdings media and publishing group. It contains news of interest to Sligo town and county along with the surrounding counties of Leitrim, Roscommon, South Donegal and North Mayo. The paper's motto is "Born To Make A Difference".
