Steel-cut oats

Steel-cut oats

Steel-cut oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in colour and resemble small rice pieces. [ [http://www.mccanns.ie/pages/products1.html McCann's Products ] ]

Steel-cut oats are also known as coarse-cut oats, pinhead oats, Scotch oats, or Irish oats. "Scotch Oats" are usually the more ground up variation, however. Not being as course as the "Steel Cut".

Steel-cut oats have a lower glycemic index than instant oats. The disadvantage with prep time, is that it's a little more. But Steel Cut oats only take about 13-14 on the stove top, not 30 minutes.
