James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormonde (b. bef.
1376 -September 6 ,1405 ), was a noble in thePeerage of Ireland who builtGowran Castle and made it his usual residence. He was commonly called "Earl of Gowran". He also purchased bydeed , from the heirs of SirThomas le Despencer, 1st Earl of Gloucester ,Kilkenny Castle . In 1392, he was appointedLord Justice of Ireland .The son of
James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormonde by his spouse Elizabeth née Darcy, he married Anne, daughter ofJohn de Welles, 4th Lord Welles by his spouse Maud née de Ros, beforeJune 17 ,1386 . They had four children:
*James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormonde (1392-1452), married firstly Joan de Beauchamp, daughter ofWilliam Beauchamp, 1st Baron Bergavenny andLady Joan FitzAlan , and had issue. He married secondly, Lady Joan, widow of Jenico Grey, and daughter and heiress ofGerald FitzGerald, 5th Earl of Kildare , without issue.
*Sir Richard Butler of Polestoun,county Kilkenny , (b. b 1396), who married Catherine, daughter of Gildas O'Reilly of Cavar, Lord of East Breffny, and had issue.
*Edmund Butler, married Catherine, daughter of Robert Forstall, and had issue.
